Spinal Disraphism Surgery in Turkey
Spinal dysraphism is an umbrella term identifying a variety of birth disorders that affect the spine, spinal cord or nerve roots.
Spine: The spinal column is also known as the bony structure. The spine is composed of individual vertebrae (bones), covering the spinal cord.
Spinal cord: the bundle of nerves and other tissue that ties the brain and body together. Within the spine a set of membranes (coverings) often covers the spinal cord. The spinal cord relays sensory input from the body to the brain, as well as instructions for movement from brain to body.
Nerve roots: nerves branching from your spinal cord to reach the rest of the body.
The most popular diastematomyelia surgery, or decompression surgery, includes the removal of the thin piece of bone or cartilage separating the spinal cord. Removing this piece allows spinal cord more space within the spinal column.
Lipomyelomeningocele is treated by separating the spinal cord from its attachment to the lipoma, by extracting as much of the lipoma as safely as possible, and by closing the membranes around the backbone.
