Procedure of Adjustable Gastric Banding

Under general anesthesia, lap-band surgery is performed laparoscopically. A laparoscope, a lighted fiber optic tube with a camera connected to one end, is inserted into one of the small incisions in the abdomen wall by your surgeon. The other incisions are used to implant small surgical equipment. With photos sent from the camera, your surgeon will be able to observe the internal tissues of the abdomen on a monitor.

The band is wrapped around the upper half of the stomach, dividing it into two pouches: one smaller and one larger. Sutures are used to secure and fasten the band. The band is inflated with sterile saline until it reaches the proper diameter for effective stomach constriction. An access port attached to the band is put underneath the skin of the abdomen in order to modify the band. This allows your surgeon to inject or aspirate saline solution to relax (deflate) or tighten (inflate) the band as needed. The incisions are then closed.
