Atrial Septal Defect in Bangladesh
A hole in the heart is known as an atrial septal defect, or ASD for short. It’s a congenital heart defect, which means it’s something a person is born with.
The dividing wall between the upper filling chambers of the heart, known as the atria, is abnormally open in people with ASD. ASDs was diagnosed and treated successfully in the majority of cases, with little to no complications.
If the ASD is big, open-heart surgery or cardiac catheterization with a device inserted into the opening to plug it may be used to close it. The ASD can’t always be closed with the catheter procedure if it’s in an odd location inside the heart or if there are other heart defects, such as irregular connections of the veins carrying blood from the lungs back to the heart (pulmonary veins).
