Thalassemia Transplant Treatment in Bangladesh
At this time, hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is the only therapy that has the ability to cure thalassemia. HCT uses high-dose chemotherapy to destroy thalassemia-producing cells in the marrow and replace them with healthy donor cells from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood, normally from an HLA match: a relative. Both patients who have a suitable donor should accept this therapy. HCT has a greater result in younger patients, but it’s best to get to a transplant centre as soon as possible.
On the basis of risk factors that affect outcome after HCT, patients are graded as Class 1, 2, or 3 patients prior to HCT.
