Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is a method of delivering radiation to tumors by placing radioactive sources either within or immediately adjacent to tumor tissue.
Since the source of radiation is very close to the tumor, therapeutic radiation can directly affect the tumor while having limited effect on normal tissue. Low dose rate (LDR) or high dose rate (HDR) strategies may be used to provide brachytherapy, depending on the amount of time the radioactive sources stay in operation.
Brachytherapy enables radiation oncologists to deliver a high dose of radiation to a tumor while reducing exposure to healthy tissues surrounding it. This, in turn, will help to reduce the side effects that otherwise could occur if healthy cells suffer radiation damage
