CyberKnife Radiosurgery
CyberKnife radiosurgery is an innovative radiation procedure that treats tumors anywhere in the body with precisely a high dose of radiation. This does not require an actual knife as a painless, non-invasive operation which is labeled “radiosurgery” because of its accuracy.
The CyberKnife system emits a narrow radiation beam from a robotic arm that travels across the patient’s body to target a tumor with precision. The robotic arm automatically monitors and compensates for minor movements, using brain scans taken before and during the operation.
A accurate map of the position of the tumor in the brain is constantly modified during the operation, so the patient can only rest comfortably without anesthesia on the treatment bed. The versatility of the robotic arm also makes it possible to treat areas of the body, such as the spine and the spinal cord, that other radiosurgery techniques can not handle.
