Laminectomy is an operation that creates space by removing the lamina — the back of a vertebra covering your spinal canal. Laminectomy, which is also known as decompression surgery, enlarges your spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
A cervical laminectomy is a medical procedure developed by extending the spinal canal to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerve. A small part of the bony roof of the spine, the lamina, is removed during a cervical laminectomy to provide more room for the nerves. A cervical laminectomy may be performed by a surgeon with or without fusing vertebrae (cervical spinal fusion) or removing part of a bone.
You will be able to return to work within a few weeks, depending on the amount of lifting, walking and sitting that your job requires. When you undergo spinal fusion as well, so the healing time will be longer.
