Unicompartmental Knee Replacement Surgery
Unicompartmental knee replacement is an alternative to total knee replacement for some patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Unicompartmental knee replacement is a minimally invasive surgery in which only the damaged compartment of the knee is replaced with an implant.
A small incision is made over the knee during the surgery to reveal the joint in the knee. Only the damaged portion of the meniscus will be removed and the implant inserted inside the bone by slightly forming the shin bone and thigh bone. The plastic part is put in the new prepared area and sealed with cement from bone.
Now the weakened portion of the femur or thigh bone is removed to accommodate the new metal part which is sealed with bone cement in place. If the femoral and tibial components are set in the appropriate position, a variety of motions can take the knee. Afterwards the muscles and tendons are healed and the incision is closed.
