Decortication of Vocal Cords in Turkey
“Swelling in Reinke’s space”; a voice disorder caused by accumulation of gelatinous substance in Reinke’s space.
A “radical” surgical procedure that removes (“strips”) the top layers of the vocal folds resulting in severe vocal fold scarring and abnormal voice. Due to the resultant damage, this procedure is at present rarely used. Surgery is mainly indicated when patients are sufficiently motivated to eliminate the cause or causes, such as quitting smoking. Surgery is also indicated in patients who may be at a high risk for vocal fold cancer.
Decortication of vocal cords is a surgical procedure in which the damaged mucosa of the vocal cords is removed.
Patients may have some pain and swelling in the affected area that will gradually disappear. A vocal cord rehabilitation programme is also recommended later on. Patient should have liquid diet for couple of days, Should drink plenty of water and may take steam inhalation. Patient should not try to clear the throat and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Patient is advised not to talk or make sounds the days after the procedure.
