Laryngectomy Surgery cost in Bangalore

Surgery is widely used to treat laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. Depending on the type, stage, position of cancer, and other tissues involved, various procedures can be used to remove cancer and often other tissues near the larynx or hypopharynx. In almost all operations, the plan is to remove all cancer along with the rim (margin) of healthy tissue around it.

Surgery may be the only treatment required for certain early-stage cancers. It can also be used along with other therapies, such as chemotherapy or radiation, for later-stage cancers.

After cancer has been removed, reconstructive surgery can be performed to help make the modified areas look and function better.

 Procedure for Laryngectomy Surgery

Voice or sound output from vocal cords in the larynx.

Preventing food or drink from entering the lungs while swallowing by closing the epiglottis.

Allowing the oxygen to breathe to get to the lungs.

The larynx is made of cartilage and consists of three main sections: the supraglottis, the glottis, and the subglottis. When a patient undergoes laryngectomy, the trachea (windpipe) and the esophagus (food pipe) are disconnected, making breathing and swallowing distinct after surgery. A stoma (hole) is put in the neck, in front of the trachea, to breathe. After a complete laryngectomy, you will lose the ability to talk. A partial laryngectomy can allow you to talk. A transesophageal puncture (TEP), a hole in both the trachea and the esophagus, can be used to place a prosthetic voice box.

Laryngectomy may be used to treat some cases of:

Cancer of the laryngeal.

It’s an injury.

Radiation necrosis (death of cells) caused by radiation therapy.

There are a few types of laryngectomy surgery, including:

Total laryngectomy: the entire larynx (voice box) is removed. A permanent stoma (tracheostomy) is developed to establish a new way of breathing. This procedure may include the removal of a portion of the pharynx (tubular structure linking the nose, larynx, and lungs), some lymph nodes, and some nearby muscles.

Partial laryngectomy: part of the larynx (voice box) is removed. A temporary tracheostomy may be mounted, which may be removed at a later time.

Harm to surrounding organs such as thyroid and parathyroid glands. This can contribute to hypothyroidism and/or calcium abnormalities. Other organs that may be affected are the trachea and esophagus.

What to expect immediately after a Laryngectomy Surgery

The first few nights after laryngectomy are usually spent in an intensive care unit (ICU). As in any other surgery for head and neck cancer, the patient may have one or more suction drains under the skin to absorb any small amount of fluid in the neck. After some days, the drains are removed. Intravenous lines (IVs) may also be used to give fluids and medicines.

Although the lower part of the throat is recovering after a laryngectomy, the patient may not be able to swallow food or liquids. In order to provide nutrients, a small flexible plastic feed tube is normally inserted through the nose in the stomach. If all goes well, the patient will be able to start swallowing around one week after surgery, and the feeding tube will be removed at that time. If there is fear that the tube will be required for a longer period of time, a tube may be inserted directly into the stomach via the skin of the abdomen. The positioning of this tube, called a PEG, is more complicated, but once it is easier to take care of and less visible.

In certain cases, following surgery, a tracheostomy tube is inserted into the stomach. However, this is typically achieved on a temporary basis before the stomach stays open on its own
