Fontan Surgery in Turkey
The Fontan procedure is an open-hearted method of surgery. The Fontan operation involves routing of systemic venous return directly into pulmonary circulation bypassing the subpulmonary ventricle. This is an effective palliation in patients with complex congenital heart disease involving single ventricle physiology.
Fontan Surgery Objective:
Make blood from the bottom of the body go straight into the lungs. It helps the blood to collect oxygen without going through the skin. Low-oxygen blood from the lower part of the body combines with high-oxygen blood in babies with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Low-oxygen blood and high-oxygen blood no longer combine during Fontan operation. It helps the heart to only pump high-oxygen blood to the body.
