Microdochectomy Surgery in Turkey
A Microdochectomy is a surgical procedure that removes one single duct from the isolar complex of the nipple. Normally it is achieved when a patient has a discharge of nipples from a single duct. Until entering operating theatre, the patient would be told not to pinch the nipple.
The aim is to remove a single duct only. The excised duct should be sent to a breast pathologist to decide whether there is any reason for the discharge of the nipple (e.g. papilloma – a tiny growth within the duct).
Typically this operation is done as a day case and involves cutting all the ducts that open on to the nipple surface. There are between 12-15 ducts opening into the nipple surface and certain diseases may affect all the ducts of the breast.
The treatment takes place under a general anaesthetic. A small incision is made around the areola (the line between the nipple ‘s brown area and the rest of the breast ‘s skin), and all ducts are removed and sent for pathological evaluation. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures, and the application of a waterproof dressing.
