Modified Neck Dissection Surgery in Turkey
Modified neck dissection is indicated for clinically palpable metastatic neck disease. Conversion to radical dissection of the neck is necessary after gross involvement of the nerve, vein and muscle, while involvement of all 3 is rare, even in very advanced disease (N3).
This procedure involves extracting the same lymph node classes as those involved in dissection of the radical neck but includes protection of 1 or more of the following 3 nonlymphatic structures: the spinal accessory nerve, the internal jugular vein and the sternomastoid muscle. Preserved structure or structures should be stated explicitly in the name of the operation.
