Laparoscopic Banded Sleeve Gastrectomy in Turkey
Sleeve Gastrectomy is a type of Bariatric Surgery, performed to reduce the stomach size to 15 per cent of the original stomach size. The greater curvature of the stomach (stomach curve near the opening of the esophagus) is surgically removed resulting in the stomach being sleeved or tube-like. Also known as Gastrectomy Sleeve.
Banded Sleeve Gastrectomy is an add-on to the regular sleeve gastrectomy technique, whereby a non-adjustable silicon ring is mounted around 3-4 CMS below the OG (esophagogastric junction) on the gastric sleeve tube which has already been formed. This is done to continue the restrictive element of the standard procedure even years after the surgery thus ensuring long-term weight loss and avoiding weight regain.
Laparoscopic banded sleeve gastrectomy (LBSG) appears to be significantly more effective in terms of weight loss in midterm follow-up than laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Placing an elastic band or stomach ring around the upper sleeve will further restrict food intake volume and avoid long-term dilatation of the distal stomach sleeve into the band. There is a sequential action mechanism with a band or ring component: Sleeve gastrectomy is mostly active at the start, while gastric restriction from a band or ring may result in more weight loss after this time. Also, the band/ring will help in maintaining the weight, especially when restriction starts to fail and weight regain occurs due to gastric dilatation. The procedure thus combines the potential benefits of SG and gastric banding.
Benefits of Banded Sleeve Gastrectomy:
- Reduction in weight
- Maintains blood pressure
- Improves erectile dysfunction
- Decreases the risk of heart conditions
- Improves blood pressure, joint pain, diabetes, etc
- Reduces up to 60% of the patients’ weight
