Renal Angioplasty in Turkey
A renal angioplasty is a way of relieving a blockage in the renal artery, the main blood vessel to the kidney, without having an operation. A fine plastic tube, called a catheter, is inserted through a blockage in an artery, and a special balloon on the catheter is then inflated, to open up the blockage and allow more blood to flow through it. Kidney arteries often require the insertion of a tiny hollow tube called a stent to keep it open after the procedure.
A vessel might require stent placement, in addition to percutaneous angioplasty. A stent is a mesh metal tube which is pushed into the vessel’s sides to keep the vessel open. A non-deployed stent is wrapped around a balloon in angioplasty. At the end of the catheter lies the balloon. The combination balloon and stent are mounted inside the vessel at the stenosis. The balloon then becomes inflated and thus the stent extends (deploys), pressing it against the inside of the vessel wall. Upon complete extension of the stent, the balloon is deflated and removed from the vessel. The stent is held inside the lumen to keep the vessel open.
Post Surgery you will return to the ward after X-ray staff are happy that there is no bleeding from the groin puncture. On the ward you will stay on bed rest for 12 hours. After this you will be able to get up and walk around. You will be given something to eat later in the day. Normally you will return home the day after the X-ray. Usually a blood test will be done before you leave the hospital.
