Automated implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator – AICD Surgery
An Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) is a small electronic device inserted into the chest to track and correct an irregular rhythm of the heart or arrhythmia. Both machines are used and are the most effective way to treat severe and life-threatening arrhythmias.
It takes about an hour for procedure. You will be given some mild sedation during this period to help you relax and feel at ease. You’re going to be awake but drowsy. The region under the collar bone will be numbed with local anaesthetic and a slight cut (approx. 5-8cms) will be made by the cardiologist to insert the AICD. Then the leads are directed into the heart via a vein, and attached to the unit.
