ASD Atrial Septal Defect Surgery
An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers of your heart (atria). The condition is present at birth (congenital).
Small defects may be found by chance and never trigger a problem. Any minor atrial septal defects close during early childhood or in infancy.
The opening increases blood flowing into the lungs. A big, longstanding septal atrial defect will damage your heart and lungs. Surgery or closure of the system can be required to correct septal atrial defects to avoid complications.
