BD Glenn Shunt Surgery
Bidirectional Glenn is a surgical treatment used for children who do not have two pumping chambers of the heart. This can be caused by many different diagnoses which all result in a single ventricle.
These conditions include:
HLHS
Tricuspid atresia
Atrioventricular Canal Defect (AVC)Unbalanced atrioventricular (AV) canal defect
The bidirectional Glenn technique directs the blood flow directly to the lungs from the upper body veins, rather than the heart pumping the blood to the lungs first. The bidirectional Glenn shunt redirects blood flow from the upper body veins and is frequently done before a Fontan procedure is performed. The treatment in Fontan completes the change of direction by controlling the blood supply from the lower body veins to the lungs
