Coarctation Repair Surgery
A narrowing of the major artery (the aorta) that carries blood to the body. This narrowing affects blood flow where the arteries branch out to carry blood along separate vessels to the upper and lower parts of the body. CoA can cause high blood pressure or heart damage.
A special catheter which contains a balloon is placed in the restricted area during cardiac catheterization. The balloon is then inflated for a brief period of time, stretching open the restricted area. They then cut the balloon and the catheter.
Mostly, surgery helps to treat coarctation. A surgeon needn’t open his heart to patch the coarctation. They can be modified in a variety of ways. One way to reduce the narrowed aorta section is for the surgeon. Another choice is to add a patch to the arm or a graft of synthetic material over the shortened portion using part of the blood vessel.
