RIRS – Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery Surgery
RIRS is done to extract stones without making any incisions on the kidney by using a laser and a viewing tube called a fiber optic endoscope that goes through the kidney via the urethra. It is achieved with general, local, or spinal anesthesia. This technique requires a qualified urologist who has qualified in RIRS training.
The device is inserted through the urethra, through the ureter and eventually into the urine-collecting region of the kidney to perform this operation. Therefore, the distance is shifted retrograde, i.e. up the network of the urinary tract and inside the kidney, i.e. intrarenal. When the device is in place, the doctor can see the stone and can move, smash or evaporate it with a laser.
