Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva – RSOV Surgery
An irregular enlargement of an artery is considered an aneurysm. Typically caused by a weakening of an artery’s walls. Valsalva sinus aneurysm (SVA) is a rare disorder that can be acquired or congenital. Valsalva aneurysm sinus rupture can occur naturally, and can be caused suddenly by exertion, trauma, or heart catheterization.
Symptoms often include acute chest pain, pain in the right upper quadrant, cough, difficulty breathing, swelling in the legs, and decreased urine output.
In patients with a ruptured SVA, urgent surgical repair may be needed by the primary suture closure (pledget) or patch closure. Using the transcatheter closure, repair can be performed percutaneously. Open heart surgery with aortic root repair or replacement, and repair or replacement of aortic valve may be needed depending on the patient’s condition.
