Norwood Surgery
The Norwood procedure is a type of open-heart surgery.
This procedure is used for,
- Build a new aorta (the main path from the heart to the body).
- Make the right ventricle pump blood to the body through the new aorta.
- Make the right ventricle pump blood to the lungs through a new path to the pulmonary artery (the main path from the heart to the lungs).
Babies who have the Norwood procedure typically spend 3 to 4 weeks recovering in hospital. They get the treatment and supervision around the clock. We are also having medicines that support the heart and improve blood flow.
The care team will be teaching parents how to care for their baby at home during this time. In general, babies will go home when they eat well, grow well, and gain weight.
